Volunteers may have the opportunity to observe and support healthcare services in departments such as Outpatient Care, Maternity, Paediatrics, General Medicine, and other units, depending on the hospital's needs and the volunteer's qualifications. Programme Requirements

To participate in the Medical and Healthcare Volunteer Program at Tengeru Hospital, applicants should be pre-medical students, medical students, nursing students, qualified healthcare professionals, or individuals with a genuine interest in the healthcare field. Volunteers must be at least 18 years old, have a good command of English, and demonstrate a positive attitude, professionalism, and respect for patients and local staff.

Depending on your level of training and qualifications, you will be assigned appropriate tasks under the supervision of the hospital staff to ensure a safe and educational experience for both volunteers and patients.

  • Volunteers must be 17 years or older at the time of joining the project.
  • Background or studies in medicine, nursing, public health, physiotherapy, or related fields (advantageous but not mandatory).
  • Good communication skills in English (basic Swahili is helpful).
  • Compassion, patience, and respect for medical confidentiality and cultural practices.

Duration and Location

The program is located in Arusha, Tanzania, with placements in local hospitals, clinics, and therapy centers. Volunteers can join for a few weeks up to several months, depending on their availability and level of commitment, with opportunities to engage in both urban and rural health initiatives.

Living Arrangements and Accommodation

Volunteers stay in our Rafiki Houses in Arusha, which provide shared rooms, communal areas, and family-style meals. The houses are centrally located with easy access to project sites and local amenities, creating a comfortable home base where volunteers can relax and connect with fellow participants after their medical or therapeutic work.

Volunteer Responsibilities

  1. Assist medical staff with daily routines, including patient check-ups and administrative tasks.
  2. Provide basic health education and awareness to patients and local communities.
  3. Support physiotherapy or rehabilitation exercises under the supervision of professionals.
  4. Help care for patients by offering companionship and encouragement.
  5. Participate in health outreach programs, including community clinics and awareness campaigns.
